Every photo you take with a phone or digital camera arrives with more information than the picture itself. Tucked inside the JPEG file is a block of text called EXIF — Exchangeable Image File Format — that records when, where, and how the photo was made. You never see it in the image, but it is there, and it is the reason a tool like PhotoLabeler can pull the real capture date, the GPS coordinates, and the camera settings onto the picture without you typing anything.
What EXIF stores
EXIF is a long list of fields, but the ones that matter for labeling are a handful:
- DateTimeOriginal — the moment the shutter fired. This is the date worth stamping; it differs from the file's modification date, which changes every time the file is copied or edited.
- GPSLatitude / GPSLongitude — where the photo was taken, if location services were on. Some phones also record GPSImgDirection, the compass bearing the camera was pointing.
- Make and Model — the camera or phone manufacturer and model name.
- LensModel — the lens, on cameras that report it.
- FocalLength, FNumber, ExposureTime, ISO — the exposure recipe: how far zoomed, how wide the aperture, how long the shutter stayed open, and how sensitive the sensor was set.
- ExifImageWidth / ExifImageHeight — the pixel dimensions of the image.

Why EXIF matters for labeling
The alternative to reading EXIF is typing everything by hand, which is slow and usually wrong. When the labeler reads DateTimeOriginal, it uses the capture moment, not the day you exported or uploaded the file. When it reads GPS, it places the photo where it was actually taken, not where the device was when it was sent. The metadata is the source of truth; the label is just a way of showing it on the image.
Where EXIF goes missing
EXIF is fragile. Most platforms that re-encode a photo strip some or all of it:
- Social media and messaging apps — WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and X remove EXIF on upload for privacy. A photo forwarded through chat usually arrives blank.
- Screenshots — a screenshot has no capture date or camera; only the operating system and the moment it was grabbed.
- Scanned prints — a scan of an old photo carries the scanner's metadata, not the original camera's, so the date is the scan date, not the moment the picture was taken.
- "Export" and "Save for web" options — many editors discard metadata unless you tell them to keep it.
When no EXIF is found, the labeler falls back to a field you can fill by hand. A typed date is still useful, but it is a note rather than evidence, so it is worth keeping the untouched original alongside any labeled copy.
How to see a photo's EXIF
You do not need special software. Drop the photo into the free labeler and the metadata panel shows the capture date, camera, lens, exposure, and GPS that the tool read from the file. On a phone, the native Photos app has an info ("i") button that reveals the same fields; on desktop, most file browsers show a "Properties" or "Get Info" pane with a Details tab.
When to strip EXIF, and when to keep it
EXIF is useful for you and revealing to others. The GPS that makes a location label possible also tells anyone with the file exactly where you stood. Before sharing a photo publicly, decide:
- Keep it when the photo is for your own archive, a family album, or a workflow where the date and location are the point — inspection records, deliveries, field notes.
- Strip it when you publish the image widely and the location is private: photos of your home, your children, your commute. Many platforms do this for you, but not all.
Because the labeler burns the useful fields onto the image as visible text, you can strip the raw EXIF from the export afterward and still keep the date, settings, and coordinates on the picture — the best of both: the information travels with the image, the private metadata does not.
